GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Objective Guiding Principles are essential for determining coaching action at any given moment. They are non-negotiable. Without them, subjectivity creeps in, resulting in dissonance within the team environment. It’s imperative to note that these guiding principles cannot be upheld if the coach does not know his or herself. A leader cannot consciously (or unconsciously) lead through the notion of, “Do as I say, not as I do.” I have provided mine below.

  • Definition of Success: doing the best we can, with what we have, where we are.

  • Player-centered: Value comes from who they are and not what they do. Every team member is important.

  • Performance is valued over Results

  • Learning is a never-ending process

  • Mistakes are a part of learning - Feedback not Failure

  • Clear & Consistent Communication

  • Principles = Constant | Feelings = Change

  • Authentic/Transparent relationships

    • Actions speak louder than words

  • Training Sessions resemble the Game

    • The foundation for all sessions = Team Functions/Playing Principles

Note: My Guiding Principles are a work in progress due to the ever-evolving nature of people and the game.
