The 10 best exercises for muscle, strength and power

Number nine; the bench-press

The Bench Press

The Bench Press

People really overestimate the value of the bench-press. It is valuable enough to hold a place in the top 10 exercises though. While publishing this article I already had 2 people whining about an 8th place being too low. Why do people love the bench-press so much you ask me? Well, I think it has something to do with the fact that in most gyms the most pronounced sentence of all is “how much can you bench? “. Men like to brag about their ability on the bench-press, it is a true macho-exercise. I never heard anyone ask “how much weighted dips with 10kg strapped to your belt can you do?”, despite the fact that the dip would be a far better way to measure strength. (With the dip the performer of the exercise has to carry his body-weight, so having a higher bodyweight will require you to be stronger to perform the exercise. With Bench-pressing this is not the case, someone that is 60 pounds heavier than you will have a much easier time pressing the same weight as you do. )
